Are Starbucks Rewards accounts shared between Canada and the US?

updateLast updated

Quick Answer

No. Starbucks Rewards Canada and the U.S. program are separate — Stars earned in one country do not transfer. Your Starbucks Card balance also stays inside the originating country.

Two programs, two apps

Starbucks Rewards Canada and Starbucks Rewards U.S. are separate programs run on separate apps (Starbucks Canada vs. Starbucks). Your Stars, profile, and payment methods do not sync between the two. If you sign up for Rewards in Canada and then use the U.S. app while travelling, the app shows a balance of zero and your U.S. purchases earn no Canadian Stars.

There is no merger mechanism. Starbucks has maintained this separation since Rewards launched in Canada (2009) and has not announced any plan to unify the two.

Starbucks Card region-lock

A Starbucks Canada Card stores a CAD balance and can only be redeemed at Canadian company-operated stores. A Starbucks U.S. Card stores a USD balance and works only in U.S. stores. If you present a Canadian card at a U.S. Starbucks, the barista cannot process it — the POS rejects the card.

This also applies to digital cards in the app. The Starbucks Canada app only loads Canadian cards; switching to the U.S. app requires creating a new U.S. account with a U.S. phone number and address.

Star earn and redemption differences

In Canada, members earn 2 Stars per $1 CAD when paying with a registered Starbucks Card or the app. In the U.S. the ratio is different (2 Stars per $1 USD on Card or app). Redemption tiers are also separate:

  • Canada: 25 Stars (extra shot/syrup), 100 Stars (brewed coffee/tea/bakery), 200 Stars (handcrafted drink), 300 Stars (hot breakfast), 400 Stars (merchandise)
  • U.S.: 25 / 100 / 200 / 300 / 400 Stars with the same tiers but different menu items eligible

Menu items eligible for redemption differ — Canadian bakery offerings include maple butter pastry and poutine-style savoury items not available in the U.S., and vice versa.

What transfers and what doesn't

  • Your Starbucks Rewards email account — can be used to sign in to both apps, but creates two separate profiles
  • Mobile Order — each country's app has its own order history and favourites
  • Free refill benefit — applies inside the same visit at any company-operated store in the country where you earned Gold status; does not cross the border
  • Birthday reward — awarded separately in each country if you belong to both programs
